    Recommendation Letter for “Costa Rica - As It Is”

    Costa Rica - As It Is” - An adventure birding operation - Founded and operated by Gustavo Orozco and his wife, Katherine Peña. A two-week birding tour of north-central Costa Rica from February 18, 2020 to March 3, 2020.

    In a word – superb!

    We have just returned from our 15 day mega-birding safari around north-central Costa Rica. By the numbers: 326 bird species overall with a whopping 238 new species to add to our life list and 88 birds that were already part of our life list. We covered over 1700 km with our extremely knowledgeable and very friendly guide/driver, Gustavo (just the three of us - with the occasional addition of the guide's charming and equally knowledgeable wife, Katherine) in a rented 2020 Toyota Rav 4.

    We visited the Sarapiqui and Savegre Rivers, La Selva, Braulio Carillo, Carara, Monteverde, Palo Verde and Cerro de la Muerte - everything from sea level lagoons to 12,000 feet high mountain ridges. We went to rain forest, cloud forest, dry forest, beach, marsh, savanna and above the timberline ecosystems. In addition to the birds we saw sloths, coatimundis, peccaries, an orange-knee tarantula, snow bats and a long nose bat, crocodiles and spectacled caimans, capuchin and howler monkeys and the highly venomous fer-de-lance snake (from a safe distance).

    Our journey began by being guests at the tour operators’ own 300-acre property, the Jamaical Field Station. This land is pristine primary and secondary growth forest which offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy nature “as it is” away from crowds and tourist over-development. The lodging was clean, safe and comfortable, Katherine’s cooking was both “typica Tica” and “americana;” meals were ample, delicious, made with loving care - really top-notch and the birding was “out-of-this-world.” The property is also a conservation site for a number of vulnerable, threatened or endangered bird species such as the Three-wattled Bellbird, the Ornate Hawk-Eagle and the Umbrellabird. We felt honored to be able to spend our first two days at this important ecological resource.

    Gustavo and Katherine are consummate professionals in the tour guiding business. They worked out every detail of our trip with us - and for us - and were completely transparent in what we could expect and in how much it would cost. There were no unexpected over-costs or miscommunications during our time in Costa Rica; everything was planned out and most was paid for in advance. Gustavo’s knowledge of the roads, the paths, the trails, the parks and all they could contribute to our tour was comprehensive and impressive. Avoiding the major touristic crowds and planning (and adjusting plans) so as to use our time efficiently, without the stress of traffic and crowds, was an exercise in masterful strategizing.

    Safety, good experiences, attention to detail and smooth delivery of service: these are the top priorities of “Costa Rica: As It Is.”

    Gustavo and Katherine are extraordinary bird guiding specialists. With over 30 years of birding experience in the field and with top-of-the line optics, Gustavo guided us, educated us and “wowed” us about birds and birding far beyond our expectations. How else would we have been able to find 30 new hummer species, 6 new owls, 11 new parrot family species, the Great Potoo, almost all of the 10 different trogons with close-up views of 4 Resplendent Quetzals in one tree, as well as a family of 3 Jabirus in their nest? Gustavo is a dedicated and focused guide; always judging the best path to take to bring us to see target birds and use our time well. Never flagging in energy, enthusiasm or positive outlook, he was also sensitive to our abilities to climb at high elevations and to accommodate us at times we when needed to slow down the pace. But every day Gustavo had a “surprise” built into the day plan; some unexpected bird or secret birding site off the usual tour stops he wouldn’t tell us about until - hello - a Great Green Macaw couple in their nesting tree, or a pair of Black and White Owls, or a couple of 3 cm Long-billed Hermit chicks in a tiny, precision-built nest, and so on - each and every day.

    Gustavo and Katherine are delightful people to be with. Gustavo is a most companionable, friendly, laid-back person even while focused and on guiding the trip. He effortlessly builds rapport and is a natural conversationalist. He also knows and has great exchanges with all the local guides in each area, which multiplied our possibilities to find “hard to locate” birds seen recently by locals. His incomparable patience, care and professionalism were exemplary. He was enthusiastic to share with us his great love and respect for his country, its history and people, for the profession of bird guiding as well as for the bounty of the natural wonderland of Costa Rica. We were thrilled when Katherine could take some time away from her MBA degree project to join us on an outing or two; what a great team this couple makes out in the field. The four of us shared many laughs and happy moments and together found a whole lot of birds!

    One of our birdwatching friends in Montreal, who has taken guided tours around the world, referred us to “Costa Rica: As It Is” birding guide Gustavo Orozco, with the caveat: “Watch out, he will spoil you forever; he is the best guide I’ve ever birded with.” We thought, “How can that be?” But it turned out to be so true!

    • Recycling workshop

    Work at school farm recycled paper workshop

    Recycling is a process whose main objective is to convert waste into new products or raw material for later use.

    Thanks to recycling, it prevents:

    • The disuse of potentially useful materials
    • The consumption of new raw material is reduced, in addition it reduces the energy use, air pollution (through incineration) and water (through landfills)
    • As well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to the production of plastics.

    Recycling is a key component in the reduction of contemporary waste and is the third component of the 3Rs («Reduce, Reuse and Recycle»).

    In adventure we encourage learning with the I recycled paper workshop where students will make their own paper, together with students from the Agricultural College and we will deepen with a day of volunteering with a women's recycling association.

    This day the students will collaborate with the women's recycling association, in this way the feeling of reducing the consumption of materials that affect nature will be increased

    Cheese Making & Yogurt Classes

    Food security is very important for today's world, part of learning together is to give basic knowledge of how to obtain by-products from milk, in this case cheese and Yogurt.

    The knowledge within this educational adventure will potentiate more entrepreneurial tools for students.

    • Biofuels Workshop

    What biofuels is?

    Biofuel is an ester (similar to vinegar) that can be obtained from different types of animal or vegetable oils or fats; like soybean, rapeseed, palm tree, among others; Through a process called transesterification, organically derived oils are combined with alcohol (ethanol or methane) and are chemically altered to form fatty esters, such as ethyl or methyl ester. Biodiesel works on any diesel engine.

    The students will receive a workshop about the history of biofuels and carry out a basic laboratory for the elaboration of  it, then they will take a tour around the plant and the fats transformation area of animal origin

    • Water resources and environmental education workshop

    Humanity has become aware of the REAL need to preserve water resources, avoiding the misuse of precious liquid (waste) and, above all, preventing its contamination. The reality is far from reaching a rational use of these natural resources that although are, in part, renewable, there is a danger that the increase in their use and pollution will exceed their self-regenerating capacity.

    • Arborization workshop for farms as a solution to create ecosystems and produce meat sustainably

    The reality of producing hand in hand with nature and in conjunction with the various ecosystems generates excellent stability in terms of meat production and its sustainable impact with the environment, minimizing the use of products in animals (hormones, antibiotics)

    Being able to balance the feeding of the animals with a soil free of chemicals and pesticides will produce healthier animals thus healthier and palatable meats.

    The Costa Rican culture is very rich in terms of food, It is based on the consumption of basic grains, rice, beans, corn, being able to share with children the typical breakfast with children and enjoy a basic Spanish class, will make us know more about our people , of our culture, of our food and especially our language.

    It is a way to increase the cultural heritage of tourists and promote cultural exchange will make us more educated.

    Jamaical Field Station

    El Jamaical is a 100 hectares property 3 hours away from San Jose, on the way to La Fortuna.

    Most of the way the road is paved except the last 10 kilometers, gorgeous mountains and pristine rivers are found within the property, abundant wild life and scenic views of the Tilaran range are available. The property has  a building of about 210 square meters of construction, which functions as dormitory for student groups of some Universities and small Colleges in the US,currently Texas Christian University, Harper College in Illinois as well as Huntingdon College in Alabama. This building is made of wood and located in the middle of the rain forest of the property, remind us or a tree house.    The building has 5 dorms as well as a kitchen, dining room , a small class room, bathrooms and showers,  with capacity to host 20 Students, also 2 cabins completely furnished to host the Faculty during their stay. The Tree house which is also use as a Biological Station by this institutions was conceived  to host  University groups and facilitate access to Tropical Rain Forest for academic projects of this Universities with credits gained by students while they developed their field work on site, and complete their academic goals.The property also has an extensive network of trails in primary forest as well as secondary forest. One of the boundaries of the property is the majestic San Lorencito river,  also small creeks cross the property as well. There is access to the property all year in 4x4. The property borders the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve as well as The Arenal Volcano National Park and Alberto Manuel Brenes  preserve,the entire area is an impressive 100.000 acres of protected rain forest in our backyard! Our package includes transportation from the paved road to the Station, all meals during stay, full use of facilities and assistance by the owner who is currently a nature guide and conservationist.

    Natural history walks, such as conservation talks in Costa Rica deepen the thinking of the participants further, promoting values and principles of appreciation of nature

    We facilitate to transmit to the new generations and especially to students a direct learning with nature and the environment, where our slogan is that you learn by doing, where you learn by interacting with professions in different areas of science, technology and environmental education.

    Where knowledge is the basis of success for the protection of Mother Earth, where flora and fauna are involved, and environmentally friendly practices.

    If they are academic programs are by credits in some courses, the professors develop the subjects in the station! For example some specific details with Leaf-cutter. They can also do it with birds, butterflies, plants and so much more.

    Students go from theory to practice, sealing and internalizing their knowledge, at the end of their educational experience they will be able to disseminate new seeds of appreciation and protection.
